Beer: The Drink of the People
By Guest Contributor Paul Bennett

MugThough Marx’s class lines were etched deeply into the sands of our modern economy and culture, there is one similarity that has been enjoyed on all levels of the social structure since it’s inception. From bourgeoisie to proletariat, beer has always been the drink of the people.

There is no class system within the realm of great beer, it is brewed, purchased, and appreciated by one and all. This widespread appreciation for the affordable greatness provided by artisanal beer is certainly the motivating factor behind the exponential growth in craft beer we see today.

In the recreational beverage market there has been an infusion of quality small batch products. However, these products come at a very steep price to the consumer. How many of us are able to pay $50+ dollars for a good bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, $75+ for a bottle of champagne, $100+ for a bottle of Scotch? Sure, we may take out a second mortgage to afford the occasional bottle for a special night or anniversary, but is liquid greatness simply unattainable as an accompaniment to dinner or during the game on Monday night?

This is where great, craft-beer comes to the rescue. If you pay between $7-15 for a six pack, chances are that you will be purchasing some of the greatest beers produced in recorded history. A 750-ml bottle may cost anywhere from $3-20, yet after popping the cork you will be enjoying a beverage that is truly second to none. If you spent that amount on wine you would find yourself scratching the bottom of the barrel in the world of decent wines. If you tried to spend that on a bourbon, vodka, or whiskey, well, you’re reasons for drinking are better left to a discussion between you and your “sponsor”.

You see, the difference is that the beers in this price range are truly the kings of their respective jungle. They are centurion recipes that bring you the best beers from Germany, England, France, Belgium, and Canada. They are also from the new school of brewers here in the U.S.; Men and women who have proven time and again that their beers can stand toe to toe with some of the finest beers from all over the world.

Don’t let a multi-million dollar commercial fool you into thinking if you are drinking a “micro-brew”. If a mass produced “Cherry-wheat” is what you are judging craft beers by, sadly, you are still in the dark. Spend a weekend talking with beer sommeliers like myself, and I promise we will find the right beer, at the right price, just for you!
